Not a fan of the author (Slammarkin? No.), not my genre (Poor Irish story again? No.), not my time period (Not another WWII story!!).I could not put the book down. Finished it in two sittings.If you're looking for a book that is dense, action-packed, emotionallyrewarding, and haunts you days after you've finished it, buy thisbook. In a small 3 bed overflow maternity unit in a Dublin hospital, nurse Julia Powell must care for women in the late stages of pregnancy who are also feverish from influenza. She works alone until a young volunteer in the hospital for the first time arrives to help her as a runner. As a retired RN, I was unable to put this book down. Not only did it bring back memories of my nursing training before the days of digital thermometers and IV pumps, but it resonated with me because of the emotional care nurses provide to patients that are alone and frightened. It is a perfect book for this time in our lives when COVID-19 has turned so many lives upside down. It illustrates the pressures our nurses are under to provide care when they are exhausted or working short-handed. I just loved this book. I couldn't put it down and read it in one sitting.
