Ebook About Robin Loxleigh and his sister Marianne are the hit of the Season, so attractive and delightful that nobody looks behind their pretty faces.Until Robin sets his sights on Sir John Hartlebury’s heiress niece. The notoriously graceless baronet isn’t impressed by good looks, or fooled by false charm. He’s sure Robin is a liar—a fortune hunter, a card sharp, and a heartless, greedy fraud—and he’ll protect his niece, whatever it takes. Then, just when Hart thinks he has Robin at his mercy, things take a sharp left turn. And as the grumpy baronet and the glib fortune hunter start to understand each other, they also find themselves starting to care—more than either of them thought possible. But Robin's cheated and lied and let people down for money. Can a professional rogue earn an honest happy ever after?Book The Gentle Art of Fortune Hunting Review :
Heyer, but Gayer.Siblings Robin and Marianne Loxleigh are witty, beautiful, impoverished members of the English upper class. Well, most of that is true, anyway. They've charmed hundreds of members of the ton, are invited nearly everywhere, and have chosen their targets, uh marks, uh loves of their lives. They are moving in for the kill.. Uh for bonds of holy matrimony to seal their love. *Simper*"She has made her choice, and she must be aware that money doesn’t buy happiness.”“She also knows that happiness doesn’t buy food.”Their dark, rather desperate past is in the past ("We lit our way to London with burning bridges," says Robin) and they are thinking only of the future.KJ Charles is one of my favorite authors. This book not the best I've read by her. Of course, her "not the best" is still really good. The book moves (sometimes crashes) along, dreams and dreams and secrets.Besides being highly quotable and witty, I felt like Robin and Hart needed each other to find out that they were both worth something. The intimacy between them (not the sex but the cuddling - so much cuddling) and the conversations and arguments, really made the book shine. The confrontation at the ball near the end of the book (no spoilers) was vastly satisfying.I felt like the romance between Hart and Robin, which got off to a predatory start, but made sense later, was almost secondary to Marianne's life and her character growth, which would make an amazing plot. I didn't feel like we got to know Giles, Hart's best friend and one of Marianne's suitors, well enough. Hart's sister and her past were discussed multiple times, but I didn't feel like I knew her now.I think that's what I didn't love about this book: the secondary characters were stunning and exciting, but not given enough screen time. I wanted to see Marianne charm her suitors, to watch Hart's niece be brilliant (her statistics/gambling conversation with Robin was excellent), to watch Hart run his business, to not have quite so much happen offstage.I got an arc from the author, for which I'm extremely grateful! Charles brings many of my favorite things about her writing to this book, such as dynamic and memorable characters and the politics of family and society. Robin and Hart clash immediately, which of course means that they are meant for each other. Hart sees through Robin and his sister’s fortune-hunting scheme and sets out to protect his innocent niece from such a match. Unfortunately, Hart’s niece has other things on her mind, and ultimately, Robin does too.A significant loss at cards brings Robin and Hart even closer together, much to the reader’s delight. Hart is awkward enough to be adorable, and Robin is smooth enough to be genuine in his affection. Neither man is terribly forthcoming about their pasts, which leads to direct conflict since both are working to secure the best future possible for the women in their care. To be fair, the women in their care are smarter than both men put together, but such is the lot of women in this era. Those without a fortune crave that security, and those with one tend to underestimate the privilege of their status. This book is not my favorite of Charles’ stand-alone historical romances, but I have no regrets reading it. She maintains her status as one of my favorite authors, and this novel again proves why. New fans of Bridgerton looking for more stories that buck generic standards set in this English era should definitely check this book out as an excellent introduction to this author.
